Guatemala the Vacation of a Lifetime?
By Mauricio Aguilar Editor in chief at large.
In a Trump world, the The media has you thinking that countries like Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize and Nicaragua are crime filled countries and people should stay away. But the truth is far away from that facts.
Here are the do’s and don’t.
1: Is it safe? Nothing in the world is safe you be tied down in a psychiatric ward and a fly can come in your mouth and you can choke to death. Fact!
But the truth is, it’s very safe if your not looking for trouble the people are extremely nice and helpful yes English is a barrier, but if you have a translator on your phone you’re able to get far without having to look like your a mouse walking to a snake pit. I flew in from Costa Rica, is was a 1 hour flight and a round trip from Costa Rica was $220 dollars with Volaris airline. https://www.volaris.
I’m not a big fan of the airline but they do service free drinks and although the planes are not that nice the staff are well trained and helpful, I give them a 3.5 stars out of 5 stars for customer in-flight service.
Once I arrived I had a few friends pick me up. I was impressed on how many US franchises were in the country it included, Krispy Kreme, Dunkin’ Donuts, Wendy’s, Burger King, McDonald’s, KFC in a slew of others including, IHOP, Skillets and Olive Garden, pretty impressive for such a small country . Guatemala also has Walmarts and big box Stores along with authentic Korean barbecue restaurants as well as their national foods. One of the nice things about Guatemala is that people like to do a lot of rotisserie chicken and grilled foods they believe in healthy eating even though they are a variety of fast food joints. Prices all over the country I found it be extremely reasonable down to the word cheap. So this time I was able to save a little bit of money by staying at a friends house rather than at a hotel I thought that would’ve been the most reasonable situation not knowing how cheap the country is. But after i arrived at my friends house I was able to find an Airbnb rooms of beautiful penthouses for $40 a night and hotels were also pretty cheap averaging between $30 and $150 a night for a four-star hotel.
So we took the drive to Tikal Ruins we drove 7 hour and it was worth the experience, the buildings were constructed way before the time of Christ and possibly older than that it is impressive to see architecture still standing was such a precise precision 90°. I personally wanted to take the experience to connect to the roots of my ancestral people, being from Central America I felt that there was a need to connect to the ancient gods grounds and the magnetic pull of the earth and the people who once walked the land before the colonizers. this is must see if your of Latin decent. I had the the privilege to do a dose of DMT if it was one of the most eye-opening experiences I’ve ever had truly I don’t promote anybody doing anything unless they are prepared mentally do so, it’s was such big ground moving experience and that is all I’m gonna say about it, to each their own.
We drove Heading towards Guatemala City as we arrive to the city I was utterly shocked to see how many Pine tree’s are in the country except the country cool even though it is scorching hot during the day the pine trees were able to keep the temperature down throughout the city and most of the outskirts it was impressive is he said green environment in such a hot country.
After such a long drive myself and my friends decided to go and take a day at the Hot thermal water hotel and Spa
Rooms range $95 to $145 Night for two people. We decided to do a day trip instead and for $130 we were able to have unlimited pool access to all the hot thermal pools as well two complementary 25 minute massages and free smoothie drinks. The massage tables in rooms were very clean and modern the staff was very knowledgeable and truly knew how to make you feel comfortable and relax you with great deep tissue massage. Once I completed the massage I ended up going to the hot thermal pools and there were people there guiding you on the way the ancient people used to take advantage of the different types of temperature waters for therapeutic purposes we will start at a mile temperature pool reach the multiple hottest pool of 110° and then we would dip ourselves in a cold pool to shock the system and close the pores. Such a nice experience and we did not have to spend so much money.
I had the pleasure of going to the mall doing some shopping I found of the items where fairly priced as items in the United States most of the stores are here for everything from Forever 21 To Bass. Great variety over all.
From Antigua, Tikal and to Guatemala City these locations around the country truly do not feel like you’re in a war zone which the country is not in!!! it is actually pretty safe and enjoyable place to visit I wound suggest to people, if they would like to do an experience with a small budget and see some life altering locations Guatemala is the country to see.
